ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS STANDARDS EVER OWNED STILL SURVIVING

The beautifully restored 1935 Standard 9 now parked on display

on a marble floor in the Galle Face Hotel for the guests to see.

THE STORY

August 27th, 1940, was a bright day and a smartly dressed 19-year-old

Greek prince who lived down Chatham Street, Colombo, in an annex

of Admiral’s House walked down the street. Suddenly he spotted a little

car and wanted to own it because he had never owned a car of his own.

He was a handsome midshipman serving in the peaceful tropical paradise

of Sri-Lanka, then the British Colony of Ceylon. When he saw the modest

little two door saloon registration number X8468 priced at £12- equal to

SEVEN weeks’ pay for a midshipman, he decided to purchase it.

At that time his future bride lived thousands of miles away in England.

Who was that Greek Prince you ask? He was non other than Prince Philip

of Greece who was station in Ceylon for a short period of time.

On August 27th the registration of transfer was completed.

Consequent on a transfer from Winston Guy Boshier, I, H.R.H Prince Philip of

Greece, Mid.R.N of Admiral’s House, Colombo, declare that I am entitled to

the possession of motor car NO X8468 and hereby apply to be registered as the

 owner thereof.

Nowadays he is of course better known as H.R.H Prince Philip husband

of our own H.R.H Queen Elizabeth 2. He now has of course a choice of

a dazzling array of cars to choose from in the Royal Mews at Buckingham

Palace, London.

His Royal Highness has a silver framed photocopy, signed by himself of

the transfer to him and a photograph of his first car, at Buckingham Palace.

The car today looks shiny and beautiful, renovated by Mr. Cyril Gardiner,

and housed in the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
